iPhone Unseats Razr for Top Spot

It’s happened. According to Dealerscope magazine, a Consumer Electronics trade publication, the iPhone is now the best-selling handset in the USA! A quarterly survey by NPD Group reports Motorola’s popular RAZR is #2, followed by RIM’s Blackberry Curve and LG’s Rumor in spot 4 and LG’s enV2 at 5th place.

The iPhone being the number one handset is a spectacular achievement and really speaks to the market’s wants and needs. It’s only sold through 3 major outlets (2 until recently adding Best Buy), it’s expensive compared to most phones and it’s arguably one of the most feature-rich phones. Oh and it’s tethered to iTunes, Apple’s ubiquitous music player/digital hub software, which is very unique. Additionally, the iPhone comes from a company who has no experience making a mobile communication device, which in itself makes this top-spot an unbelievable achievement.

Another interesting point of the survey is that 4 of the top-5 phones are in the category of “smart” phone or “feature” phone, meaning they all have some sort of keyboard and more features than our TRS-80 desktop computers did.

We think this is great news, but now are sort of bummed that everyone now has an iPhone and think Apple needs to introduce a geek-exclusive model for higher street cred. Ah well, what’s good for Apple is good for us.

iPhone v.2.0 Software Issues Reported: Wait to Upgrade

Many users have been reporting issues with their iPhone becoming inoperable after installing the firmware upgrade version 2.0. Our snoops in the field believe that it’s due to AT&T’s servers having issues keeping up with all the activation activity. Funny how AT&T wanted a regular activation process this time around and it’s even more screwed up than Apple’s “new way” of activation.

Best advice is to wait on the Version 2.0 upgrade. We’ve had some experts say that waiting until the middle of the night may be the best advice at this point! We’re going to wait until Apple can confirm that AT&T’s activation servers are back up to snuff.

Apple Releases iPhone Firmware Upgrade v.2.0: Blogosphere Freaks Out!

Again, from the unless you live under a rock department, Apple has introduced the highly anticipated version 2.0 firmware upgrade for the iPhone. This is the one that gives you all sorts of fun features, like “Exchange-like” push email, parental controls, and what was that other thing? OH, yes, native applications! Now you can run AIM and other applications on your iPhone, all while running your battery down that much faster.

How do you get this update? Go to iTunes and select your phone’s icon, then click check for updates. iTunes and your phone will take care of the rest.

The blogs have been going wild about this news all day. Apple was wise to introduce this one day before the vaunted 3G introduction, tomorrow, July 11th. iPod SDK Released Today – Applause Heard Worldwide

Apple, Inc. today formerly announced their Software Developers Kit (SDK) for their celebrated iPhone. We’re not going to get into all the details, as other Apple-related news outlets have covered it in-depth. Plus, we weren’t there at the press thing (not sure why we weren’t invited–maybe next time), so we’d be reporting secondhand, which is a lot of what you get these days on blogs, so why continue on with this sort of activity.

We’d like to recommend a reputable Apple news source and article for this story–Macworld. Read all about it here.

Our take is that this is a very good thing. We like how it’s structured and believe that this will be a successful launch of legitimate 3rd party apps for the iPhone.
